New ILLUMRA LED Dimmers Provide Ultra Smooth Wireless Dimming

ILLUMRA Self-powered Wireless Controls introduced its new 65,000 dim step 24VDC wireless LED Dimmer along with its new wireless 0-10V Dimmer at Lightfair 2009 in New York. The new wireless devices provide ultra smooth LED dimming at all light levels. The wireless dimmers provide users the ability to adjust light levels to their preferences and allow the use of energy saving LED lights with the convenience of quality dimming control.

The ILLUMRA wireless 24VDC LED dimmer overcomes a major challenge faced by standard PWM LED dimmers; the device eliminates the issue of choppiness at low dim levels. Through the use of thousands of PWM dimming steps, the ILLUMRA LED Dimmer creates what is perceived by the natural eye as a single continuous dim — even at low light levels. The dimmer can easily drive 12V or 24V LED fixtures and loads requiring up to 5 amps of current. A unique feature of the dimmer is that it can be controlled from any switch wired to its local control input, in addition to ILLUMRA battery-free, wireless light switches.

The 0-10V Dimmer is used to control dimmable LED power supplies or dimmable fluorescent ballasts. In addition to its industry-standard 0-10V output, the dimmer conveniently provides a fully isolated switch output driver. The driver can be used to control an external relay, contactor or power-pack, completely disconnecting the load when it’s not in use, thereby achieving maximum energy savings.

The wireless capability of the new ILLUMRA dimmers allows users to control or dim lights using self-powered wireless light sensors, wireless occupancy sensors, wireless light switches, or other ILLUMRA wireless transmitters. This means the dimmers are able to be used in a variety of applications such as architectural dimming, daylighting, load shedding, manual ON / automatic OFF control, and more. The dimmers can dim lights in response to wireless light sensors indicating when natural light is available. They can also turn off or dim lights in vacant rooms or hallways by responding to signals from wireless motion sensors; additionally, the dimmers can be manually controlled with self-powered wireless switches. Each dimmer has an input for a wired 24v sensor, stores up to 30 wireless switches or sensors in its memory, and may function as a repeater for use in ILLUMRA wireless control networks. The ILLUMRA LED Dimmers are FCC/IC approved and RoHS compliant to minimize the environmental impact over the life cycle of the products.

Winter Games Go Green with LED Dimmers from ILLUMRA

Winter Games

Orem, UT, April 2010 – ILLUMRA, the leader in wireless battery-free controls, announced that their new LED dimmers reduced energy consumption up to 75 percent on light poles installed for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games. The ILLUMRA LED dimmers were installed on outdoor LED light poles along a pathway between venues at the Winter Games. LED street lamps use about 25 percent less energy than conventional metal halide fixtures (source: TIME). ILLUMRA dimmers dramatically improve this savings. This breakthrough technology may be seen at the upcoming LIGHTFAIR trade show in Las Vegas (EnOcean/ILLUMRA booth #2027).

Wireless LED Dimmer“LED dimmers are a great way to save energy,” said Jan Finlinson, director at ILLUMRA. “By reducing the output of the lights when no one is on the pathway, customers achieve significant energy savings while maintaining a level of security, ambiance and convenience for venue attendees.”

Each pole is equipped with a light sensor, LED lights, motion sensors and ILLUMRA wireless LED dimmers. The equipment keeps the lights dim when no one is on the pathway, and turns the LEDs to full brightness when pedestrians are near. Wireless signals share pedestrian occupancy status among the network of light poles.

The system works by sensing motion along the pathway, allowing the network of dimmers to adjust their light levels based on the movement. When no motion is detected, the lights dim, consuming 75% less energy.

“The immediate energy savings and long term life cycle cost of LED lighting make it a compelling solution for energy efficiency,” states Dr. Bernell Stone, energy analyst and Silver professor of finance at Brigham Young University. “Energy management technology like that offered by ILLUMRA accelerates the payback period for LEDs, making this innovation a powerful contributor to energy efficiency.”

The wireless dimmers from ILLUMRA provide ultra smooth LED dimming with industry-leading performance of 65,000 dimming steps, thus eliminating the flickering at low light levels that other LED dimmers exhibit. The units can dim up to 5-ampere loads of either 12V or 24V LED lights.

BuildingGreen Announces 2007 Top-10 Green Building Products

BuildingGreen, Inc., publisher of the GreenSpec® Directory and Environmental Building News™, today announced the 2007 Top-10 Green Building Products. This sixth annual award, announced at the U.S. Green Building Council’s Greenbuild Conference in Chicago, recognizes the most exciting products drawn from additions to the GreenSpec Directory and coverage in Environmental Building News.

“Our selections of the Top-10 Green Building Products represent a wide range of product types in many different application areas,” noted GreenSpec coeditor and BuildingGreen president Alex Wilson. Four of BuildingGreen’s winning products this year save energy. Two products save water. Three products are green in part because they are made from recycled or recovered material; two because they avoid hazardous manufacturing or disposal of materials, and one aids in the siting of solar energy systems. “Most of the Top-10 products this year have multiple environmental attributes,” said Wilson.

BuildingGreen’s Top-10 product selections, as in previous years, are drawn from new additions to the company’s GreenSpec product directory. More than 200 product listings have been added to the GreenSpec database during the past year. “New products seem to be appearing all the time, making it a challenge for our staff to keep up,” said Wilson. The GreenSpec database the company maintains now includes more than 2,000 product listings.

A big driver in the development of green products continues to be the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® Rating System (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), which awards points for the use of certain product types or for the energy or water savings that green products can achieve. “Designers of LEED buildings are looking for green products, and manufacturers are responding,” said Wilson. In the online version of GreenSpec, users can find products organized by LEED credits.

The 2007 Top-10 Green Building Products are listed below. More complete descriptions and contact information is provided on the attached pages:

  • Wireless Controls from EnOcean

About GreenSpec Directory

GreenSpec is the leading national directory of green building products. Products are selected by editors of Environmental Building News (EBN) based on criteria developed over the past 15 years. Manufacturers do not pay to be listed in GreenSpec, and neither GreenSpec nor any other BuildingGreen publication carries advertising; both are supported exclusively by users of the information. “Our policy of not accepting money from manufacturers allows us to be objective in our review of products,” said Wilson. A new 7th edition of the printed GreenSpec Directory was published in 2007. The GreenSpec product database is also available online as part of BuildingGreen Suite. Environmental Building News, founded in 1992, is the oldest and most widely respected newsletter in the green building field. BuildingGreen, Inc., celebrates its 22nd year in business this year.

LIGHTFAIR Stage Set for Rollout of Energy- Saving ILLUMRA Wireless Light Sensor

ILLUMRA, the leader in wireless battery-free controls, announced the release of a newsolar-powered light sensor that can run indefinitely on a few hours of light a day. The new product, when used with other wireless devices, creates a daylight harvesting solution that is both easy to install and use. This breakthrough technology may be seen at the upcoming LIGHTFAIR trade show in Las Vegas (EnOcean/ILLUMRA booth #2027).

“The new light sensor gives building owners a powerful tool to control costs,” said Jan Finlinson, director at ILLUMRA. “By reducing electrical light levels in a room and taking advantage of the ambient light, we could greatly reduce the world’s $200+ billion light bill*.”

The ILLUMRA light sensor communicates to controls through the uncrowded 315 MHz band, saving energy by lowering the output of artificial light when daylight is present in a room. Customers can reduce energy consumption 20 to 60 percent, depending on the devices used and the room configuration.

The wireless battery-free sensor communicates to a host of wireless products: relays, dimmers, room and task on/off controllers. It also integrates into systems using BACnet and wireless RS-232/Ethernet gateways.

Customers can use the new product in open-loop and closed-loop daylight-harvesting applications. When fully charged, the sensor can work in total darkness up to three days.

The ILLUMRA light sensor is small, measuring approximately 4x4x1 inches (10 x 10 x 2.5cm), and mounts on a ceiling or wall. Developed for indoor use, it has an internal antenna for best appearance, and an option to extend the antenna for best performance. The ILLUMRA light sensor is made of recyclable plastic, is RoHS compliant, qualifies for LEED credits and helps buildings comply with International Green Construction Code standard 189.1.
