Control a Plug-in Lamp via Light Switch?
Some homes were built without adequate lighting. This has forced many to purchase lamps of all sizes to illuminate some rooms in their home. The most difficult thing about using a lamp instead of installing a light fixture is controlling the actual light. Fixtures typically have a light switch. Lamps must be turned on at the source (usually by a pull string or other type of switch).
What if you want to control a lamp, or light requiring an outlet, with a light switch? Using our self-powered wireless light switch in combination with our plug-in relay receiver, you can control a lamp or light with a light switch. Do you want to know what the best part is? You wont have to touch a single wire! The wireless light switch can be placed anywhere. The plug-in relay receiver is powered by a traditional electrical outlet. All you have to do is plug in the lamp to the receiver, assemble the light switch, and you’re done! Your light switch can now be turned on and off by a light switch.

Remotely Control Light Up to 300 Feet Away
Ever wished you had a conveniently located light switch that allowed you to turn off lights in a detached building, down a hall, or across a room? The ILLUMRA Relay Receiver + Repeater (part no.: E3X-R12-5IBBP) allows you to control lights from up to 300 feet away when used with ILLUMRA self-powered remote light switches and ILLUMRA receivers. The ILLUMRA Relay Receiver + Repeater can boost operating range 100% from the standard range of up to 150 feet or be used to transmit signals around objects. The device can be used in multiple ways to increase the capabilities of an ILLUMRA wireless control network.
First, the Relay Receiver + Repeater can be used to cover a greater distance. To do so, a Relay Receiver + Repeater is connected to power in between the location of an ILLUMRA wireless light switch and an ILLUMRA receiver. An ILLUMRA remote light switch can then transmit a signal to the Relay Receiver + Repeater; the device picks up the signals and rebroadcasts them up to an additional 150 feet.
Second, the Relay Receiver + Repeater can can be used to transmit a signal around objects. In environments that contain lots of metal or other obstructions, the device can help signals be transmitted at a less obstructed angle to an ILLUMRA receiver. For example, imagine that an ILLUMRA switch that controls two ILLUMRA receivers has been installed in front of a reinforced concrete wall with metal sheeting. Receiver A is to the right of the wall and Receiver B is behind the wall. In this scenario the signal transmitted by the ILLUMRA remote light switch may reach receiver A and control lights connected to receiver A. However, the signal may not penetrate the metal wall and reach receiver B. In this situation, a Relay Receiver + Repeater may be used to replace receiver A. When this is done, the system will work as follows: the signal transmitted by the remote light switch will be picked up by the Relay Receiver + Repeater, the lights connected to the Relay Receiver + Repeater will be controlled, and the device will re-transmit the wireless signal. The signal will effectively reach receiver B and control lights connected to receiver B.
The ILLUMRA Relay Receiver + Repeater can be used in both indoor and outdoor applications. Following are a few examples:

Winter Games Go Green with LED Dimmers from ILLUMRA
ILLUMRA, the leader in wireless battery-free controls, announced that their new LED dimmers reduced energy consumption up to 75 percent on light poles installed for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games. The ILLUMRA LED dimmers were installed on outdoor LED light poles along a pathway between venues at the Winter Games. LED street lamps use about 25 percent less energy than conventional metal halide fixtures (source: TIME). ILLUMRA dimmers dramatically improve this savings. This breakthrough technology may be seen at the upcoming LIGHTFAIR trade show in Las Vegas (EnOcean/ILLUMRA booth #2027).
“LED dimmers are a great way to save energy,” said Jan Finlinson, director at ILLUMRA. “By reducing the output of the lights when no one is on the pathway, customers achieve significant energy savings while maintaining a level of security, ambiance and convenience for venue attendees.”
Each pole is equipped with a light sensor, LED lights, motion sensors and ILLUMRA wireless LED dimmers. The equipment keeps the lights dim when no one is on the pathway, and turns the LEDs to full brightness when pedestrians are near. Wireless signals share pedestrian occupancy status among the network of light poles.
The system works by sensing motion along the pathway, allowing the network of dimmers to adjust their light levels based on the movement. When no motion is detected, the lights dim, consuming 75% less energy.
“The immediate energy savings and long term life cycle cost of LED lighting make it a compelling solution for energy efficiency,” states Dr. Bernell Stone, energy analyst and Silver professor of finance at Brigham Young University. “Energy management technology like that offered by ILLUMRA accelerates the payback period for LEDs, making this innovation a powerful contributor to energy efficiency.”

New ILLUMRA LED Dimmers Provide Ultra Smooth Wireless Dimming
ILLUMRA Self-powered Wireless Controls introduced its new 65,000 dim step 24VDC wireless LED Dimmer along with its new wireless 0-10V Dimmer at Lightfair 2009 in New York. The new wireless devices provide ultra smooth LED dimming at all light levels. The wireless dimmers provide users the ability to adjust light levels to their preferences and allow the use of energy saving LED lights with the convenience of quality dimming control.
The ILLUMRA wireless 24VDC LED dimmer overcomes a major challenge faced by standard PWM LED dimmers; the device eliminates the issue of choppiness at low dim levels. Through the use of thousands of PWM dimming steps, the ILLUMRA LED Dimmer creates what is perceived by the natural eye as a single continuous dim — even at low light levels. The dimmer can easily drive 12V or 24V LED fixtures and loads requiring up to 5 amps of current. A unique feature of the dimmer is that it can be controlled from any switch wired to its local control input, in addition to ILLUMRA battery-free, wireless light switches.
The 0-10V Dimmer is used to control dimmable LED power supplies or dimmable fluorescent ballasts. In addition to its industry-standard 0-10V output, the dimmer conveniently provides a fully isolated switch output driver. The driver can be used to control an external relay, contactor or power-pack, completely disconnecting the load when it’s not in use, thereby achieving maximum energy savings.
The wireless capability of the new ILLUMRA dimmers allows users to control or dim lights using self-powered wireless light sensors, wireless occupancy sensors, wireless light switches, or other ILLUMRA wireless transmitters. This means the dimmers are able to be used in a variety of applications such as architectural dimming, daylighting, load shedding, manual ON / automatic OFF control, and more. The dimmers can dim lights in response to wireless light sensors indicating when natural light is available. They can also turn off or dim lights in vacant rooms or hallways by responding to signals from wireless motion sensors; additionally, the dimmers can be manually controlled with self-powered wireless switches. Each dimmer has an input for a wired 24v sensor, stores up to 30 wireless switches or sensors in its memory, and may function as a repeater for use in ILLUMRA wireless control networks. The ILLUMRA LED Dimmers are FCC/IC approved and RoHS compliant to minimize the environmental impact over the life cycle of the products.

A Sneak Peek: ILLUMRA Climate Controls
ILLUMRA previewed its soon-to-be released thermostat at the recent AHR Expo 2009 in Chicago. The new thermostat provides quick and easy implementation of energy saving HVAC controls without running any new wire. The EnOcean compatible thermostat plays a key role in allowing energy saving ILLUMRA controls to be used with HVAC systems.
The ILLUMRA Thermostat wirelessly communicates with transmitters and receivers already a part of the ILLUMRA product line. For example, a Keycard Access Switch may be used to control the thermostat in a hotel room. An ILLUMRA motion sensor or Room Controller may control the thermostat in an office building or other commercial setting. When the thermostat receives “occupied” or “unoccupied” signals from ILLUMRA transmitters, the thermostat adjusts temperature set points accordingly to conserve energy.
Along with the coming thermostat, ILLUMRA offers several other products that assist in energy conservation and can be used in connection with HVAC systems. These include the SLT Wireless Sensor, Wireless Motion Sensors, the ILLUMRA Room Controller, the Wireless Room Temperature Sensor, and the Keycard Access Switch. Below is a brief overview of how each system component may be used to reduce energy consumption of HVAC units.
SLT Wireless Sensor
The SLT Wireless Sensor expands the energy saving abilities of HVAC control systems by allowing light controls to be added to HVAC systems. The SLT transmits a wireless signal each time power is turned ON or OFF to the sensor. In a building where an HVAC system is installed, SLT Wireless Sensors can be connected to the HVAC unit to transmit signals according to timer presets that are programmed into the heating and cooling system. These signals are picked up by ILLUMRA receivers connected to lights and devices in the room, and allow lights to be turned off when the climate control system is in economy mode.
Wireless Motion Sensors
ILLUMRA Wireless Motion Sensors are self-powered and surface mount using no wires. They transmit occupancy signals to the ILLUMRA Thermostat and to ILLUMRA Relay Receivers that may be connected to lights or other electronic devices. When motion is not detected in a room, HVAC systems automatically set to economy mode and lights and devices turn off.
ILLUMRA Room Controllers
Room controllers may be connected to hardwired occupancy sensors to achieve the same functionality offered by ILLUMRA motion sensors.
Wireless Room Temperature Sensor
The Wireless Room Temperature Sensor is self-powered and surface mounts using no wires. The sensor can be used to monitor the temperature in a room and transmit that data to an ILLUMRA Thermostat. The thermostat then controls the HVAC unit according to programmed preferences.
Keycard Access Switch
The Keycard Access Switch is intended to help implement energy saving controls in hotel rooms. When guests enter their room and slide their room card into the Keycard Access Switch, an “occupied” signal is sent to an ILLUMRA Thermostat and to relay receivers connected to lights and devices in the room. The thermostat automatically adjusts temperature set points to a narrow range (i.e. 70-72 degrees) and power is provided to lights and devices in the room. When guests remove their room card an “unoccupied” signal is transmitted to the ILLUMRA Thermostat, setting the HVAC unit to economy mode and withdrawing power from lights and devices in the room.
Cut Energy Costs With ILLUMRA
ILLUMRA room controllers help companies increase profitability. With revenue leveling off in today’s economy, many companies are looking to cut costs in order to post profits. ILLUMRA room controllers help do just that.
In commercial buildings, cooling systems, lights, and office equipment are the top three electricity consuming devices. Lighting alone can account for as much as 30% of a commercial building’s utility bill. Using ILLUMRA room controllers to turn off lights in unused areas significantly decreases electricity usage and makes for a more pleasant utility bill.
ILLUMRA room controllers are low voltage devices used in conjunction with occupancy sensors to receive and transmit information to ILLUMRA Receivers. The room controllers help reduce electricity demand in three ways.
Automatic Off Controls
Auto Off controls pay for themselves by ensuring that any unused light is turned off. ILLUMRA room controllers may be used with either wireless or wired occupancy sensors to automatically turn off lights in unoccupied areas of a building. Compatible occupancy sensors may be motion, ultrasonic, or dual-technology sensors.
Low Power Consuming Receivers
ILLUMRA room controllers consume very little standby power. Often control systems may promise great energy savings, but when the systems are off, can still suck a lot of power. ILLUMRA room controllers require well under 1 watt of standby power to stay operational. This means when lights are off, electricity is virtually off as well.
Energy Rebates
More and more states and utility companies are offering rebates to customers who reduce energy consumption during peak use times. ILLUMRA room controllers provide systems that are CA Title 24 and ASHRAE/IESNA standard 90.1 compliant and may qualify buildings for energy rebates in your area.
So, what are you waiting for? ILLUMRA room controllers offer lower electric bills through auto off controls, low standby power consumption, and possible energy rebates. Plus ILLUMRA controls install quickly and easily, allowing you to start enjoying energy savings immediately and keeping labor costs to a minimum. Help your bottom line. Order ILLUMRA today. Decrease Costs, Increase Profits With ILLUMRA
ILLUMRA wireless automation systems provide valuable benefits for business owners moving to new locations. Whether a new building is being planned or an existing structure is being remodeled, ILLUMRA control systems can help tenants of new locations cut costs and get businesses up and running faster.
Opening a new business location can be time consuming and costly; often electrical systems are the cause of these problems. Electrical plans of new structures take time to design and install. Interior electrical systems of existing structures often need to be remodeled and customized to fit the needs of new tenants. In both new and existing buildings, business owners lose money each day the opening of business operations is delayed.
ILLUMRA provides the most adaptable wireless control system for commercial buildings. ILLUMRA automation systems offer easy-to-install lighting, occupancy, and HVAC controls. These control systems are the answer for businesses seeking to cut costs, save time, and increase profits.
New structures:
In preparing electrical plans, finalizing placement of light locations, switch locations, switch legs, and traveler wires consumes valuable time and adds days to project schedules. ILLUMRA controls do not use switch leg or traveler wires and surface mount anywhere once the building is finished. This speeds up electrical planning and simplifies installations. The design-build process, a increasingly popular method of completing builds on time and under budget, involves completing some portions of a project before all building plans are finalized. This process requires that technologies installed do not restrict portions of the project that lie ahead. In the design-build process ILLUMRA control systems eliminate difficulties arising from design revisions and change orders. ILLUMRA receivers can easily be installed along with light fixtures throughout a building; ILLUMRA wireless light switches can then be added at convenient locations when the building is complete.
Existing structures:
Uses for commercial building space change regularly. When a new store or office replaces a previous tenant, significant and expensive electrical remodeling often takes place. When the commercial space contains an ILLUMRA controls system, little or no electrical remodeling is necessary. Surface mounted ILLUMRA self-powered wireless light switches can easily be moved to new locations that may be more convenient for the new building layout. ILLUMRA receivers can quickly be reprogrammed to customize light controls to the needs of the new tenant. Adaptable ILLUMRA controls save time and money for the new business and help the business get up and running faster.
ILLUMRA SLT Wireless Sensor Extends Reach Of Control
ILLUMRA, the largest supplier in North America, of self-powered, battery-free, wireless lighting control and energy management systems, announced today the release of their SLT (Switch Leg Transmitter) wireless sensor. The SLT wireless sensor is used to extend the control of one branch circuit to other branch circuits without installing wires between them. The SLT wireless sensor connects to an existing switched load and transmits a control signal to an ILLUMRA wireless receiver, which in turn, switches a distant load. The distant load follows the existing load with both loads turning on and off simultaneously.
The SLT wireless sensor is compatible with existing ILLUMRA wireless receivers. As with all ILLUMRA wireless devices, the SLT wireless sensor is easy to install and easy to use. The new sensor reduces cost by eliminating expensive materials and eliminating tedious and time-consuming labor. The SLT wireless sensor can control an unlimited number of ILLUMRA wireless receivers as long as they are within 150 feet of the SLT wireless sensor. Each ILLUMRA wireless receiver can respond to as many as 30 different SLT wireless sensors. “The introduction of the SLT wireless sensor to the ILLUMRA line increases the flexibility of the entire line”, explained Jan Finlinson, Vice President at ILLUMRA. “Successful companies are always looking for ways to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and save energy, which is why ILLUMRA is gaining so much momentum in our industry. Our customers are finding more and more ways to apply ILLUMRA controls. With the SLT wireless sensor, the possibilities are vast, indeed”, said Finlinson.
As lighting circuits are added to a building, integration with existing control systems may be costly, complex, and/or impractical. With the SLT wireless sensor, the action of the existing lighting control can be duplicated on the new lighting circuit. For example, when task lights are added to work surfaces in an industrial manufacturing facility, the control circuits from the existing lighting systems are not available at floor level, but power is already wired to the bench-top. Installation of a SLT wireless sensor at an existing controlled load will transmit a signal to ILLUMRA wireless relay receivers installed at the bench-top, avoiding wasted energy due to task lights left on unnecessarily.
Buildings using the SLT wireless sensor and other ILLUMRA products: qualify for LEED credits, may qualify for Energy-Star ratings, require fewer materials and less labor during installation, and have the ability to use less energy. The SLT wireless sensor is manufactured to the latest quality standards in an ISO 9001:2000 facility, is RoHS compliant, is FCC and IC approved, has earned safety approval listing status according to applicable UL and CSA standards, and bears the ETL safety listing mark.

ILLUMRA Extends Range With EnOcean + ZigBee Hybrid System
ILLUMRA, the largest North American supplier of self-powered, battery-free, wireless lighting control systems, has announced its newest product innovation. The EnOcean + ZigBee long-range remote control system provides users with reliable light control at distances up to a mile away. The new long range hybrid system enables ILLUMRA self-powered wireless light controls to be used in a greater number of applications than was previously possible.
The ILLUMRA hybrid control system combines benefits of ZigBee 802.15.4 Industrial Wireless Relays (IWR) with the benefits of EnOcean compatible ILLUMRA Self-powered Wireless Controls. ILLUMRA wireless systems allow users to control electrical loads 150 feet away; the EnOcean + ZigBee hybrid system extends that range up to 1 mile. The system is made up of two component groups: first, an IWR pair designed to provide simple long-range remote control; and second, ILLUMRA battery-free wireless light switches and sensors, which are designed to provide easy-to-install light control and energy management systems. Together, these products make up the ILLUMRA hybrid system which provides simple, customizable, long range wireless light control, security control, pump station control, electronic sign control, traffic control, factory automation, and more. The hybrid system is especially effective for controlling loads across large open spaces where it would be preferable to not run wire. Examples of such applications include: barns, guest-houses, sports stadiums, tennis courts, boat-houses and garages.
The ILLUMRA hybrid system provides wireless remote control up to 1 mile away without the use of repeaters. The hybrid system uses ILLUMRA battery-free wireless light switches to produce a wireless signal. An ILLUMRA Low Voltage Relay Receiver that is connected to an Industrial Wireless Relay picks up the signal; the IWR then broadcasts the signal up to 1 mile away in all horizontal directions. A separate IWR connected to as many as four external relays, each sized for the load, receives the signal and controls attached electrical loads. The hybrid system may be used in 3-way switch applications by connecting ILLUMRA 5-wire Relay Receivers between the external relays and electrical loads.
ILLUMRA is excited about the opportunities the new hybrid system will open up to its customers. Contractors, specifiers, or other individuals can purchase components to create EnOcean + ZigBee long range remote control systems through ILLUMRA manufacturer’s sales representatives or from ILLUMRA distributors. 12 Week Project Finished in 15 Days Using ILLUMRA
ILLUMRA products were used in an “unprecedented industry move” as part of a 10,000 sq. ft. office build-out in Boston, MA. The project was named “15 days”, because it was completed in that short amount of time. It was sponsored by Commodore Builders, Leggat McCall Properties, and Audrey O’Hagen Architects, who issued the following press release about the project.
View the 15 Days press release here.
ILLUMRA products were selected as the flexible lighting control system in the build-out blitz. During Day 12, the ILLUMRA wireless switching system was quickly and easily installed, saving money in both labor and materials. A short video clip can be viewed at the following link by clicking on “Daily Archives” then click on “Day 12”, where Karl Neubauer, Senior Project Manager for Leggat McCall Properties, explains the benefits of the ILLUMRA wireless switches.
ILLUMRA’s flexibility allows the office space to change without getting in the way. In fact, ILLUMRA systems can grow and change as needs in the space evolve. For example, the light switches can be moved to new locations in a matter of minutes. New switches can be added. Existing switches can be assigned to control different light fixtures. Temperature, motion, and light sensors can control the lights, shades and/or HVAC system. Because they never require batteries to operate, ILLUMRA switches are literally maintenance-free. “ILLUMRA wireless control products are changing the way architects, specifiers, interior designers, lighting designers, and builders approach projects. Workspace personalization and office reconfiguration become more practical and affordable, and last-minute changes to wall configurations are no longer a cause for project delays,” says Jan Finlinson, Vice President of ILLUMRA.
ILLUMRA products provide ongoing savings because they can intelligently save energy through the use of wireless sensors. ILLUMRA products are also compatible with a wide variety of commonly available wired sensors from almost any manufacturer.
ILLUMRA products also qualify buildings in which they are used for LEED credits. In 1998 the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System was developed. Green buildings are healthier, more environmentally responsible, more energy efficient, and more profitable to operate. ILLUMRA products helped the “15 day” project to achieve a GOLD rating in the LEED Green Building Rating System.

ILLUMRA– a New Line of Energy Saving Controls
Orem, UT, April 30, 2008 — ILLUMRA Self-powered Wireless Controls announced today a new line of self-powered wireless controls that reduce the amount of time and materials needed to install energy management systems in green buildings. Based on EnOcean technology, the new ILLUMRA™ product line will include wireless light switches, temperature sensors, occupancy sensors and light sensors that are powered using solar or mechanical energy sources. These battery-free transmitters communicate with room and building controllers to conserve energy through occupancy sensing, daylight harvesting and personal workspace control technologies.
Green buildings minimize energy waste by switching off lights and reducing air conditioning demands in unoccupied spaces; reducing artificial light levels when natural light is available; and allowing building occupants to customize lighting and temperature preferences at individual workspaces. Implementing these technologies enhances productivity and saves on long term costs but traditionally requires extra wiring and time for installation. ILLUMRA self-powered wireless controls provide solutions for energy efficient buildings while requiring substantially less time and materials to perform the installation. Because the EnOcean based transmitters do not use batteries, the system offers maintenance-free, long-term operation.
ILLUMRA products do not require wiring from the transmitter to the controlled device, allowing the switches and sensors to be installed anywhere. Wireless light switches and sensors mount directly to walls or other surfaces and can be relocated easily. The receiver modules plug into outlets or can be hard-wired to the devices they control.
The ILLUMRA wireless light switch uses a small micro-generator to convert each switch press into a small amount of electricity that powers a built-in transmitter. ILLUMRA sensors harvest energy through a small solar cell which collects energy from ambient light.
